Bishop Finn’s Forthcoming Pastoral Letter

In two weeks, Bishop Finn will release his first pastoral letter. It will be the first from a Kansas City (Missouri) bishop in twenty-two years. Here is the text of his introductory letter released today to pastors and parish administrators:

Pornography is grave moral evil that attacks the Body of Christ and harms the common good. In November 2005, I formed a Task Force to address the problem of pornography and the damage it is doing to our families, marriages and vocations. The Task Force, consisting of priests, deacons, chancery personnel and parishioners is now headed by Deacon Ken Greene of the Family Life Office. The Task Force has a threefold approach: to heighten awareness; to develop a pro-active educational component and to offer support and follow-up education.

As mentioned at Clergy Days, I am publishing a pastoral letter on this subject entitled Blessed are the Pure in Heart, which will be released on Ash Wednesday February 21. I am designating the First Sunday of Lent, February 25 as Purity of Heart Awareness Sunday. Attached is an introductory letter which is to be read at all Masses on February 24-25. Please consider preaching on this important issue. The gospel for this Sunday describes the Temptation of Jesus, which lends itself to this topic.

The Task Force has further developed an 11 minute video to be used in the future in a parish awareness and education campaign entitled As For Me and My House. The Family Life and Human Rights offices are collaborating to assist parishes and deaneries in this valuable initiative promoting chastity and purity. I hope you will support this effort which can strengthen our parishes and families.

Thank you for your devoted service to God’s people. Best wishes for a blessed Lent.

In Christ and Mary,

Most Reverend Robert W. Finn

Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph

When the letter is published on Ash Wednesday, I’ll post and link to it. If I get a copy sooner, I might quote small portions of it if I get permission to do so.
