Guess the R’s are going to have to write their own “Barracuda,” as the Wilson sisters of Heart have asked their song not be used for campaign or the VP nominee. Governor Palin, as you may know now, was nicknamed “Barracuda” as a high school athlete.

Sometimes people don’t check the background of songs they coopt for their purposes. The barracuda in the song refer to publicity agents with the band’s first label Mushroom Records, who spread rumors of incest between the sisters.

If the real thing don’t do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn burn burn burn it to the wick
Ooooooh, barracuda?

If the R’s want to paint themselves as liars, gossip mongers, and media manipulators, I guess it’s their business. The song, however, is truly dynamite, and I’ve always appreciated Roger Fisher’s lead guitar on it. But I wouldn’t want to be the fish in that song.
