Snacking on the Word: Isaiah 26:9a

My soul yearns for you in the night, yes, my spirit within me keeps vigil for you.

It’s not even a whole Bible verse. It’s just a half verse. Today’s Lectionary passage leads off in Isaiah 26, but ends at verse 6. Taken by itself, verse 9a stands out a bit from context. But it fits for Advent.

Longing for God in the night pops up here and there in Scripture. Do you have nights in which you wake up, and the house is silent, and your eyes won’t shut, and the crazy thoughts start hemming in? Like the psalmist, Isaiah seems to know the experience, too.

Insomnia can be a serious condition, but every so often we regular sleepers might find ourselves awakened and unable to get back to sleep. What to do? Isaiah 26:9a might give a clue.

Hmmm… and I have had insomnia all week. Wish I had seen this before!
