Parish Library

STA library 1

One of the way-cool things about my current parish is the library. It’s just outside the second floor suite of offices, where I work. I love love love having Scripture commentaries, the  Fathers of the Church series, periodicals, and everything close at hand.STA library AAbove is the “panorama” view of the “stacks” from my cell phone, three images. On the left side is mostly religion and theology, Dewey STA library 5Decimal 200′s. The middle shelf is reference. On the right, you see the side of the bookshelf that has 300-999. The tall shelf in the middle is fiction. The lower shelf holds new books. Anne, our librarian, has a nice acquisition STA library 6budget for books. Staff members can recommend acquisitions. I donated a few items when I moved.

We get a nice selection of periodicals: the four Iowa diocesan news organs, and the usual Catholic suspects.

Right, is our librarian’s office.

One image I didn’t capture is the big picture window between the new book shelf and the periodical rack. It has two comfy chairs looking out to the ISU student union and the campus beyond.

Any other parishes out there with good libraries?

I long for this! So impressive, thanks for sharing this; it gives me ideas.

We have a well intended little cart with books that everyone just drops off and takes from. Much of it is not really Catholic either. *sigh*

Wow – how did that happen? Very cool. Our big Cathedral parish has a tiny little room on the lower basement level – sad.
