Paying Up, One Way or the Other

This likely isn’t going to be a popular initiative, the diocese of Ferns in Ireland asking parishes to pay half the sex abuse settlements. Obviously, the people will pay for this all eventually, by whatever assessment the diocese makes on parishes or individuals. And if the diocese does sell off property, somebody will eventually supply the cash for renting essential space or buying property in the future some day.

I appreciate the bitterness over the sex abuse settlements. Too bad that bishops in pretty much any Western culture could have avoided catastrophic penalties by simply admitting their guilt, and apologizing to people directly and sincerely.

Maybe it’s time to consult sociologists rather than lawyers.
