Cast Out Into Shallow Waters

America’s In All Things has the letter sent to bishops from CDW on sex abuse. National conference plans for handling abusers must be turned in by next May. Do you suppose Nebraska will sign on to that one? As other commentators have noticed, nothing on handling bishops–the epicenter of scandal.

Does this mean anything? We won’t know for several years–not until it works. I suppose if it doesn’t work, we’ll know sooner.

At some point, the New Evangelization may need to get retooled again. My sense was that JP2 counseled boldness, casting out into the deep. B16 revised that in terms of speaking to the wild sheep just outside the pen. Perhaps it will be left to some future pope to deal with the restlessness within the enclosure.

Here’s an instance where “epicenter” may indeed be a more appropriate allusion than “center”.
