With this post, we come to the end of the introductory section of the General Directory for Catechesis. It wraps up with a fivefold focus:
33. In order to express its vitality and to be efficacious, catechesis today needs to undertake the following challenges and directions:
– Above all it needs to present itself as a valid service to evangelization of the Church with an accent on missionary character;
– It should address itself to those who have been and continue to be its privileged recipients: children, adolescents, young people and adults;
– Based on the example of catechesis in the patristic era, it needs to form the personality of the believer and therefore be a true and proper school of Christian pedagogy;
– It needs to announce the essential mysteries of Christianity, promoting the trinitarian experience of life in Christ as the center of the life of faith;
– It needs to consider as its primary task the preparation and formation of catechists in the deep riches of the faith.
Very briefly, catechesis today means evangelization, focused on all ages, personality-forming, mystically centered on Christ, and formative of catechists.
Given the emphasis we read on apprenticeship in GDC 30, this notion could have been drawn out more clearly above in point three. The choice of speaking of the “personality of the believer” was a little bit curious. But that is part of the apprenticeship experience.
Notice in point four the emphasis on announcing the mysteries of Christian life. There are some things we mortals cannot hope to explain. Resisting that temptation is a plus.
