I suspect the Holy Father was having a Matthew 5:23 moment. The person who is sought out in reconciliation is, according the Gospel, the one who has committed the wrong.

The pope is an old man – even older than Margaret Farley – and is therefore entitled to make a few disasterous judgements.
Chasing SSPX will be one of his many disasterous judgements.
