NCR reported that Gaylord’s bishop, Bernard Hebda will be named coadjutor in Newark tomorrow. John Myers is still three years away from required retirement notice.
This kind of appointment was made in Seattle in the 80’s to attempt to punish another archbishop for liberal leanings. Maybe Pope Francis has noticed the circling of the drain across the Hudson and Atlantic.
Newark is flush with auxiliaries. The new archbishop is a lawyer, secular … and canon, too, I think. Who knows about this one? It’s another step up from a small rural Michigan diocese to a suburban sprawl. Bishop Hebda does have campus ministry experience, but how much time as a pastor?
