Advancing to the Moon

NASA is readying for a robotic reconaissance of the moon. In two years, the first of orbiters like this will swoop in low over the lunar surface and scout out potential landing sites for the American return to the moon.

High on the list of hopeful discoveries is water ice in the shadows of polar craters. It is thought that if the moon retained ices from comet impacts, it would be found where the sun has never shone. Daytime highs on the moon reach the boiling point of water. Nightly lows plunge to -250F.
