The Armchair Liturgist: Patriotic Songs in Church

Do you or would you program patriotic hymns on or near national holidays? If any non-American armchair folks would weigh in to give us a perspective, it’d be appreciated.

The musicians at Cantate Deo got me thinking. I’ve added their link to the sidebar, btw. Check them out.

  1. Carmen says:

Yes I would. However playing at the Marine base on Sunday it is pretty much a requirement and the chaplain wants an entrance and exit hymn for July 1st.

If I were at another parish I would add one say America The Beautiful or America it is something that must be added around our July 4th of course! Our country is founded on Judeo Christian principles and just a reminder of this at our liturgy too is an added benefit with the songs written for our country.
Where does it say we must leave out patriotism at our church? I don’t believe so. But know there is most likely people who want it left out too.

    Your musical servant in Christ.
