As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
Blend the butter in before the milk if you want to avoid gummy mashed taters.
…a little sour cream doesn’t hurt either.
I add tarragon and use a bit of chicken or vegatable stock. My daughter likes mashed/whipped potatoes infused with cheddar cheese, too.

real potatoes, with real butter and evaporated milk or richer. If finances allow, grated cheese and saffron. [If I’m spending precious carbohydrate choices on mashed potatoes, they’d better be both real and fabulous]
You can substitute yogurt for sour cream. Just as good and slightly different.
