Rosary on the Wall

Two parishioners fashioned a rosary last Spring and the pastor has requested we display it prominently this month. Two images for you, which I hope capture the sense of it. What do you think?

I like the color and the white crucifix…and can appreciate your pastor’s sense of communal devotion. I might have hung it differently, experimenting by encircling Mary on the wall behind kind of like the grotto @ Lourdes or constructed a very large mat and framed it maybe in dark blue with gold trim…it’s big enough that I would be able to visually keep my place from across the church if I forgot to bring a rosary.

I will bite my tongue and simply give it and “interesting approach.”

  3. sacerdos says:

Something really ought to be done with the wall to make that area a more clearly defined marian shrine in the church! statues on pillars against blank white walls tend to get lost (especially in churches as large as STM)

  4. Todd says:

In fact, there has been discussion about “defining” the shrine areas in the church. Sadly, it is not a budget priority in the current capital campaign nor was it in the previous redecoration.

Personally, I’d like to see the actual shrine space more well-defined, and not just a wide aisle on the way to Communion. But that will likely be on hold till 2012 at the earliest.

  5. Anne says:

I personally don’t care for it on the wall. Maybe it should be placed lower, near her feet perhaps. I like the position of the crucifix. Is this permanent or for the month of October?

  6. Dale Price says:

I like it. The hand resting on the crucifix is a nice touch, and the medal’s placement evokes Mary standing at the foot of the cross. Given that it’s a month-long display and the space you’re working with, it’s good.

  7. Tony says:

Dale, I had the opposite reaction. It appears that the Blessed Mother is leaning casually on her Son’s cross.

    It’s disturbing.

  8. Jimmy Mac says:

I think it belongs in the basement. It is truly one of the ugliest bits of Mariolotry that I have seen in a long time.

  9. boog says:

I think the wall rosary is beautiful. Anyone who can make something like that is special. I think Our Lady would be proud.
