The Armchair Liturgist: Friday Night Mass

armchair1.jpgIf you’re looking ahead, you’ll note the Assumption of the BVM falls on a Friday this August. Our parish has the requisite vigil Mass Thursday night, plus the two we always have on Friday morning. My pastor (old parish) is wondering about a Friday night Mass. We know we’ll have people show up for it. Probably not as many as the Thursday night Mass.

Tell us what happens in your parish for Friday holy days. Then tell us what, if anything, you’d do differently.

  1. Matthew Meloche says:

My Parish currently does a 7PM Vigil Mass and a 8 or 9 AM Day Mass.

Were I in charge, I’d do a Mass at 12 noon on the day of (in addition to the two above), because there’s a major US Military Base within walking distance (or at least a super short drive), and we could attract Catholics from there. Furthermore, I think a Friday night Mass would not hurt at all.

  2. Gavin says:

I like the idea of a vigil, early morning “Low Mass”, and evening Mass. Oh yeah, and the proper vigil readings should be done, rather than just using the same thing as the day (if applicable).

  3. Anne says:

I appreciated a mass at noon on the Feast of the Assumption. This was especially convenient when my girls were young and on school vacation at the time. We didn’t have to rush to make an early morning mass at our parish.
