There’s one task they never quite preprare you for at Parent School …
Gravedigging.
Our first pet acquisition in the Brittany era died last night, Slam, our lop-eared rabbit. He was already full-grown when adopted from an animal rescue group about six-and-a-half years ago. He chummed around with cats and dog, but the other house rabbits tended to pick on him. For some reason, he could sniff out the softie on the human side of the family, always running over to me to get petted and scratched.
Tenderness for and care of animals is cited as one of the qualities of a saint in the Catholic tradition. If so, my wife may be on the track for sainthood.
Brit was home sick from school today and watched from the bedroom window as Slam was buried at the edge of the flower garden.
My wife and daughter were hugging when I came in from putting the tools back in the shed. Some days in family life and quite sad, but it is a blessing to have one another.
Aw…thanks for this tender post.
Sad. It sounds like he had a very good home.
