The Weigel Verdict: Stupid

weigelCount George Weigel as the latest member of the Bishop Trautman Club. His assessment of Election Day: “tribal” Catholics are stupid.

Maybe we’re too stupid to realize that FOCA might well be DOA.

This kind of pro-life cred will flush faster than the US bishops’. Weigel:

“The stakes are very, very high. In addition to facilitating a greater slaughter of the innocents, FOCA, by eliminating …”

Wait a minute. Hold on.

What does he mean by “greater slaughter?” A higher abortion rate? Abortion peaked in 1981. The rate is one-third less today than then, hovering at mid-70’s levels. Are Americans going to rejoice in a slightly freer abortion climate by having pregnancies just to get an abortion? I don’t think so.

We are fast approaching 50 million abortions in America since 1973. There have been Republican administrations. There have been Democrat administrations… The onus is on: us. To end abortion, pro-life people need to take to the streets en masse, day in and day out, to create the same kind of “social unrest” that the people in the South did to end Segregation. That simple. And that hard… Also, if you’re looking for a 2012 presidential candidate who has based his entire platform on Catholic Social Teaching, that would be: me ( I’ve already declared for 2012 and the time to tangibly get behind the campaign is now, so that it looks viable in the year 2012. Or, well, you can accept the status quo and lament about having to choose the “lesser of two evils” again four years from now.

  2. Todd says:

Joe, the picture is not quite so bleak. The difference from segregation is that we can’t get millions of unborn children to march. But we can concede two important things to ourselves: the abortion rate has dropped every year since ’81 and is now one-third of what it was in that year. We can also acknowledge that other pro-choice nations have even lower rates and examine what makes abortion less workable in those countries.

Best of luck with your campaign, my friend. Seriously: keep us updated.

Weigel’s regular column in the San Francisco archdiocesan newsrag is one (but not the only) reason that I stopped it from coming to my house.

I lost what little respect I had for Weigel with his despicable column after the election, where he stated that it showed a division between states that were part of the Culture of Life, or the Culture of Death.
The Culture of Life, as exemplified by unrepentant racist states like Alabama and Mississippi, or Texas, where the bloodthirstiness of the justice system matches the greed.
