The proof will be how long Mr Donohue leaves his nativity scene in place. The Vatican display is up till February 2nd–how many Christians know why? (Hint: it’s not the groundhog.)

I’d prefer a firmer focus on Advent from the Catholic League, but I suppose you can’t get consumerism out of the holiday. Maybe he should take heart that Christmas generates more cash flow than Kwanzaa, Chanukah, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and all the other “clutter” put together. I suspect that corporate interests would refuse to let Christmas be annihilated. At least not without a substitution of something equally or surpassing in inspiring greed.

MM at Vox Nova comments on the use of the nativity scene as a weapon in the culture wars. My take is that as long as an occasional worker is trampled in the Christmas rush, this particular holiday season is just fine with the powers that be.
