No Holy Water

… and it’s not even Lent. If you go there you will know, because flowers, not sand*, have replaced the holy water.

Father Walter Polombi has directed the removal of holy water from the entrances of Santa Maria Stella Maris Church in Fiumicino, Italy. The reason: not some Lenten “fast,” but suspicion of theft for satanic rituals. Chalices and altar cloths have been stolen as well.

*A seminarian friend reported to me long ago that when the seminary liturgist put sand in the entrance basins at the beginning of Lent, he and his classmates responded by putting their cigarette butts in the silicate.
