It’s The Attitude

I’ve found the conservatives’ main objection to the president’s school address: it’s the attitude.

But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life – what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you’ve got going on at home – that’s no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude. That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. That’s no excuse for not trying.

Because, you know, having a good attitude is a socialist thingy. Why smile when you can frown? Why work when you can complain? Why make a commitment when you can coast? Why get involved when you can drop out?

I have to admit there’s some serious cognitive disconnect going on in the US right now. Democrats, not Republicans are spending into oblivion for the first time since the Vietnam War. Liberals are touting hard work, sacrifice, and tenacity and it’s the conservatives who are advocating loony protest icons like tea bags, not to mention getting money for nothing.

I may enjoy the entertainment value of the equivalent of Royals 19, Yankees 0 or Bills 66, Cowboys 3, but c’mon: you’re handing a pr coup right to the president and his advisers. Silver platter. Special delivery.
