A Tanzanian bishop is booted by Rome. No public reasons are given, but media commentators say the ousting occurred because of “violation of church moral teachings.”
What to make of this? Do Church officials have a responsibility to explain more specifically why a bishop is bounced? Keeping laity ignorant: does this really forward the healing from scandal? And in the current climate, what is worse, do you suppose, than a future cardinal putting gag orders on boys? Lots of Catholics would wonder why we wait for resignations in some cases. What’s bad enough to merit the pink slip?
