Browsing Rock’s coverage of the Hatted/Croziered/Mitred Ones, I found this link to San Jose bishop, Patrick J. McGrath’s welcoming address to the Catholic Theological Society of America.
Knowing that Maureen Tilley of Fordham University was about to give the opening plenary on the early Church and the concept of holiness, Bishop McGrath mentioned that that back then all the best theologians were bishops, but also that this ‘was a long time ago.’ He also positively mentioned and even quoted Johnson’s book Truly Our Sister.
The result? A standing ovation from the entire audience. And a great start to the conference.
Not a fan of the standing-O in church circles, but at least this was outside of Mass.
The question for Bishop McGrath: is he with them nor isn’t he? We know other bishops write blogs. Their question: do they read ’em?
“Bishop supports Johnson.”
I don’t know about that. The remarks seemed so ambiguous that he has plausible deniability on either side of the theological divide. Cardinal Burke could have uttered most of them. Sounds like a good politician rather than taking a stand.
