I was surprised when I saw this news bit in CNS today. Bishop Lennon seems to have asked for it, but headliners are saying it’s at the Vatican’s initiative. The bishop under scrutiny said:
While I am confident that I am faithfully handling the responsibilities entrusted to me, I personally made this request earlier this year because a number of persons have written to Rome expressing their concerns about my leadership of the diocese.
The NCR picked up on the original Italian press leak a few weeks ago. They have a passel of stories about discontent in Cleveland. I haven’t seen, nor could I find any more information that breakaway parish that formed in Cleveland.
The commenting laity seem mostly cynical. Bishop Lennon has about twelve years till mandatory retirement.
Jason Berry’s new book gives a lot of background to this situation in Cleveland. It is, predictably, not pretty at all.
After the butchery of the Boston parish closings, I’m glad there is some review before Cleveland goes through the same.
Rumor has it that the remaining 300 Boston parishes may be reduced to about 150.
When there is one ordained priest left, will there only be one Boston parish?
