The Catholic Church has led the way in addressing the sexual abuse of minors, said the new chairman of the National Review Board. Francesco C. Cesareo, president of Assumption College in Worcester and a member of the review board for one year, succeeded Al Notzon III as board chairman June 9 at the conclusion of the board’s June meeting.
Perhaps the time for self-congratulation has not yet been reached.
President Cesareo is an appointee of Cardinal Timothy Dolan. I wonder if the positive outlook has a connection there.
Just in the past year, Newark and Kansas City make many if not most Catholics think our bishops are lollygagging back in base camp when the rest of the voyagers are tightening their bootlaces for the long haul ahead.
The first two review board chairs were deeply critical of the bishops, around 2002-05. It might be than an adversarial relationship with their bosses isn’t particularly constructive. But singing the happy tunes doesn’t inspire confidence either.
