Continuing with the context of evangelization’s three goals, the bishops underscore the importance of prayer. Prayer is essential for fruitful evangelization. The bishops remind us of Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount: to ask, seek, and to knock. They also mention Mass, and we can ask the question: how often does evangelization figure in our intercessory prayer?
The bishops also bring an urgency to the intercession:
At Mass, in the Liturgy of the Hours, in prayer groups, and in individual prayer and devotions, we must ask unceasingly for the grace to evangelize. The moment we stop praying for the grace to spread the Good News of Jesus will be the moment when we lose the power to evangelize. (GMD 81)
Grace and power. Two words that don’t often come to mind connected to evangelization, and yet this is a truth. It is only because of God that we can spread the Gospel. God’s gift grants the power, which is a matter not of our own strength, but God working through us.
