Pastoral Bishops

David Gibson reports on USCCB Day One here. The address from the Vatican ambassador, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, has got to give some Catholics a few concerns:

The Holy Father wants bishops in tune with their people. (He) made a special point of saying that he wants “pastoral” bishops, not bishops who profess or follow a particular ideology.

Granted, this is not one of those Pope Francis interviews. But I am a bit surprised with the candor here.

This will be a significant sea change for many bishops. I think it has to come. For the sake of a fruitful evangelization, we need a different tone top to bottom.

And it will take time to show up in the ternas for Anglo-sphere vacancies, which are still ruddered by the English-speaking bishops on the Congregation of Bishops….

I think for the foreseeable future, what the pope and Vigano want can best be termed (in the US) “wishful thinking.”

  3. Michael M. says:

If most U.S. bishops did what Pope Francis is espousing they’d have to give up their seats of honor at Republican fundraisers.
