Grant Gallicho is not letting our Midwestern archbishops off the hook. He dismantles Archbishop Nienstedt’s “apologia tour.” There’s also a fb piece with a link to the Sun-Times musing by Cardinal George:
When I was ordained, I never thought any priest could do something like that. To suddenly realize, yes there are priests who can do things that evil was a shattering moment as it is for many Catholics. . . . How is it that God didn’t protect the children?
Oof.
I realize that media interviews, even the ones with prepared or limited questions are not theological treatises, but really.
I wonder what other bishops must think reading these interviews, and these hard-hitting analysis pieces.
How is it that God didn’t protect the children?
Wow.
Demonstrating the pervasiveness of magical thinking about grace. Needs to read the collected works of Flannery O’Connor for a dose of strong medicine about the supernaturally violent operation of grace. I think Mary and Joseph could have chimed in that, even when God asks, the consequences of accepting grace are very disruptive….
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
