Unpopular Popes

Jimmy Mac sent me The Tablet link suggesting the pope is surrounded by sharks:

(In her book, author Hannah Roberts) names the main characters of the conservative “opposition”, which include Cardinals Gerhard Müller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Raymond Burke, prefect of the Apostolic Signatura. But many of Francis’ opponents among the cardinals and bishops are less open in their criticism, he warns, and he has allegedly made enemies in the criminal underworld, by his reforms to the Vatican Bank (IOR).

The more things change, the more things stay the same. From four years ago:

The world’s cardinals may have elected Joseph Ratzinger pope by a large majority, but the Vatican is stuffed with curial officials, some of high rank, who resent the fact that Benedict has always been his own man.

And wasn’t some 20th century pope supposed to have been poisoned?

Cardinal Müller is getting his clock cleaned. Cardinal Burke spends a lot of time in airports. And why wouldn’t organized crime oppose virtue?
