Working Weekend

Just so I can establish some sliver of cred as not being a Francis-yes-man, let me suggest some criticism is in order for his adding six clergy and no lay persons to the weekend writing committee. I suppose it could be worse. He could have appointed six female secretaries.

  1. Todd, I think you will find that all those named are already Synod Fathers; the lay people present are auditors, which strictly speaking means they just listen. Outsiders normally are not involved in helping write the ‘relatio’. John Paul II/Bendict XVI made sure that nothing untoward came out from the small discussion groups by having Curial point men in there as secretaries.
As to the actual membership, the balance between the continents isn’t for the best. I’d have liked to have seen a voice from Africa, possibly a voice from India, and also from the Orthodox community. Living in Asia, in regular contact with confreres from different Asian countries makes one aware of the diversity present in Asia. Who can speak for Asia? The answer would have to be not just one indivudual, the chorus has many voices.
