PS 6: The Season of Lent

Jesus arms outstretchedRemember, you can check the full document on this site, among many others on the internet. A brief citation from the Ceremonial of Bishops introduces this chapter (PS 6-26) on Lent:

6. “The annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the Holy Mountain of Easter.

“The Lenten season has a double character, namely to prepare both catechumens and faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. The catechumens, both with the rite of election and scrutinies, and by catechesis, are prepared for the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation; the faithful, ever more attentive to the word of God and prayer, prepare themselves by penance for the renewal of their baptismal promises”. (Cf. Ceremonial of Bishops, 249)

Whether baptism or penance, the aim is the same: to get people ready to encounter Christ in the Paschal Mystery. That encounter will lead to the invitation to follow the Lord, and to find one’s own life broken open by grace in order that the Guest may enter in.
