Did you notice a longer or shorter Gospel reading this past weekend? In my last parish, the pastor preferred long versions whenever there was a choice. In my new parish, it’s up to each of our retired priests, as far as the Gospel is concerned.
Sit in the purple chair and render judgment on this weekend’s Gospel from Mark 12. Include the condemnation of the male Scribes in verse 38-40, or stick to the theme of poor widows who trust in God?
The longer pericope is richer for its compare/contrast and also contrasts with Elisha in the first reading, so I’d prefer the longer.
Chose long, as did one of my associates. The other chose short.
I’d always go for the longer version – there’s always benefit in sharing more of scripture with people. Unfortunately I live in Ireland, where short is pretty much always chosen to make Mass quicker.
I can’t imagine going for the shorter one in general, but for this past Sunday – absolutely not.
