What is authentic apologetics?
229. Today the authentic apologetics practiced by Church fathers as explanation of the faith must be restored. Apologetics in itself does not have to be negative or merely defensive. Rather it entails the ability to say clearly and convincingly what is in our minds and hearts, as Saint Paul says, “living the truth in love” (Eph 4:15). Today more than ever Christ’s disciples and missionaries need a renewed apologetics so that all may have life in Him.
When I first began to encounter the term in the early 00’s, my first reaction was, “For what do we have to apologize?” Too often for those of us in North America apologetics is a one way imaginary conversation with the worst of the arguments against Catholicism, Christianity, or so-called orthodoxy. By locating apologetics in the heart as well as the mind, and placing it in the context of something lived rather than thought, the Aparecida bishops have a fruitful path for the effort.
