An English Christmas Carol, “All In the Morning” gives us this verse:
It was on Holy Wednesday
And all in the morning,
That Judas Betrayed
Our dear Heavenly King
And was this not a woeful thing?
And sweet Jesus we’ll call him by name.
Ralph Vaughn-Williams arranges it here in a 1969 recording. Some of the best music weaves those long threads across years. At Christmas, we are reminded of sorrow, betrayal, and death. Even deep into Holy Week, we know the past and the future, and can hold to that morsel of joy.
