Aparecida 437k: Pastoral Proposals For Marriage Annulments

Years before Pope Francis called for reform on how the institutional Church handled broken marriages, the Aparecida bishops advocated for an initial step: diocesan tribunals that worked faithfully and with some dispatch:

k) With regard to requests for annulment of marriages, efforts must be made so that ecclesiastical tribunals are accessible and act correctly and promptly.(Cf. Sacramentum Caritatis 29)

Pope Benedict references the 40th proposition in this citation, a shared idea then with the world’s bishops for the last decade’s meeting on the Eucharist.

For deeper examination, an English translation of the 2007 document from the Aparecida Conference.
