Aparecida 441a: Pastoral Suggestions For Ministry To Children: Prayer

441. In this regard we propose some pastoral guidelines:

Let’s read the first of nine Aparecida bishops’ suggestions for ministry to children:

a) Draw inspiration from the attitude of Jesus toward children, that of respect and welcome as the favorites of the Kingdom, caring for their integral formation. The example of prayer of their parents and grandparents is important for their whole life; it is their mission to teach their children and grandchildren their first prayers.

The example first, and the teaching next. Even from young ages, people will imitate adult behavior, and at an early point, absorb the essentials of it. The Lord’s witness is that children are optimal practitioners of a relationship with God. Family members, especially elders and most especially parents, give the needed example. It is something that cannot be outsourced to religious education professionals.

For deeper examination, an English translation of the 2007 document from the Aparecida Conference.
