The last two pro-life initiatives from the Aparecida bishops involve lay action in the political sphere. Let’s read:
h) Promote the formation and action of competent lay people, encourage them to become organized to defend life and family, and urge them to participate in national and international bodies.
Much ink and keystrokes are spent on the issue of clergy involvement. Some Catholics, including some bishops, are pilloried for opposing a high level of involvement by those in holy orders. The criticism is misplaced. Working in the secular arena: this is the proper place of lay people.
A word on conscientious objection:
i) Assure that conscientious objection is recognized in legislation, and monitor to ensure that it is respected by governments.
