The churches of Latin America and the Caribbean should also create opportunities for the use of art in the catechesis of children, adolescents and adults, and in the Church’s different ministries. The Church’s action in this field must also be brought up to the technical and professional improvement required by artistic expression. Hence a critical awareness must be introduced so as allow the artistic quality of what we produce to be judged objectively.
Art was a primary form of catechesis in times and places when and where literacy was low. If literacy is more widespread today, perhaps the reach of art is underestimated. Good art communicates deeply and illustrates aspects of faith that defy explanation that is both accurate and accessible.
