This section of Chapter Four addresses the role of community in seeking holiness. The most ancient Christians found community indispensable to their search for sanctity. Even outside of Christianity, we see people of other faiths banding together in structures that look very much like Christian monasteries and other associations.
140. When we live apart from others, it is very difficult to fight against concupiscence, the snares and temptations of the devil and the selfishness of the world. Bombarded as we are by so many enticements, we can grow too isolated, lose our sense of reality and inner clarity, and easily succumb.
