Aparecida 518lm: Beauty And Other Ways To Serve

518. So that the inhabitants of cities and their outskirts, both believers and non-believers, can find fullness of life in Christ, we feel the need that pastoral agents, as disciples and missionaries, must to strive to develop:

l) A pastoral ministry that makes provision for beauty in proclaiming the Word and in the various initiatives, helping to discover the full beauty that is God.

I think the discussion here is about something more than beauty at Mass or in churches, where most traditional-leaning Catholics would see the Aparecida bishops leaning. I would think music is part of this–not just liturgical. The early Jesuits evangelized and catechized through plays, musicals, and operas. That’s an aspect of culture popular in some quarters that could benefit from thoughtful application from the Bible.

m) Special services responding to different activities proper to the city: work, leisure, sports, tourism, art, etc.

Sports, yes: Catholics provide chaplains. Some work locations do have offerings for believers and even seekers. Considerable creativity would be a plus in these potential developments.

For deeper examination, an English translation of the 2007 document from the Aparecida Conference.
