Aparecida 520: At The Service of Unity and Fraternity

Section 7 of chapter ten will explore the Church At The Service Of The Unity And Fraternity Of Our People. The pope emeritus shares an important hope. The melting pot is a useful symbol at times, a myth at others. The Church would indeed desire that the mixture of peoples and cultures would work for a beneficial society through out the Western Hemisphere.

520. In this new cultural situation, we declare that the project of the Kingdom is present and is possible, and hence we aspire toward a united, reconciled, and integrated Latin America and Caribbean. Dwelling in this shared home is a complex racial mixture and a variety of ethnicities and cultures, in which the Gospel has thus become on the Continent the supporting element of a dynamic synthesis which, with various facets and according to the different nations, nonetheless expresses the identity of the Latin American People.(Benedict XVI, General Audience, Apostolic Visit to Brazil, May 23, 2007)
