I saw a few bits of fuss about Wednesday being assigned as a day of fasting and prayer for the time of pandemic. Over the years, I’ve seen similar dismay at the suggestion that the day of Transfiguration be assigned the status of an ember day or something because of the first use of a nuclear weapon against a civilian population.
As a liturgist, I suppose either takes me aback. After some consideration, though, I don’t think I have a big problem with it. The coming week will be critical for the US, as infections rise alarmingly and we’ll see if Louisiana and Illinois Protestants or Florida and California beachfolk give us a spike in sickness.
Meanwhile, above, Henry Ossawa Tanner’s magnificent depiction of Wednesday’s feast.
