A Night Prayer

A favorite prayer of the 19th century saint:

May He support us
all the day long,
till the shades lengthen
and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.
Then in His mercy
may He give us a safe lodging,
and a holy rest
and peace at the last.

As you readers know, I favor Compline these days over the other hours. In pandemic time, it’s a meaningful end of the day, especially in the weeks when I was mostly isolating with my family. While I know that the Office has a concluding prayer for each of the days of the week, I think this prayer is exceptional. Maybe for Sundays and feasts. Perhaps any day.
