It’s been whispered that there’s “blowback” from Archbishop Gomez’s statement on President Biden.

Republican friends, relatives, and websites have been surfacing on my social media connections. Some comments are rightfully concerned. That’s okay. Many people don’t realize the history of decriminalizing abortion, nor do they appreciate how advantageous its entrenchment is to many people who claim adherence to either extreme side of the issue.

Praise for executive orders makes for a mixed bag. I see various bishops signed on to these, but who pays attention? And I don’t mean that as a swipe at bishops, but as a serious question. I know many organs of the USCCB do fine work. But that labor is mostly by lay persons.

My feeling on these issues? Cynicism and sadness. It would be nice to think we could come to some reasonable agreement on things like immigration. But we struggle to bring a pandemic under control–a matter we really need to bring to closure. A lot of work ahead. Probably not a time to be flapping lips too much.
