Let’s talk about INTERNATIONAL POWER with Pope Francis. First, we can lambaste the powers-that-be for entrenching instead of reforming:
170. I would once more observe that “the financial crisis of 2007-08 provided an opportunity to develop a new economy, more attentive to ethical principles, and new ways of regulating speculative financial practices and virtual wealth. But the response to the crisis did not include rethinking the outdated criteria which continue to rule the world”. [Laudato Si’ 189] Indeed, it appears that the actual strategies developed worldwide in the wake of the crisis fostered greater individualism, less integration and increased freedom for the truly powerful, who always find a way to escape unscathed.
That is one of the greatest scandals of the century: that nobody was really found to blame, and that the system continues as it did pre-2008: a lack of ethics, a tilt toward the 1%, and the acquisition of massive wealth and power to the detriment of the human race.
