Just Desserts?

Would we have done better to listen to Pope Paul VI and get cooking on evangelization in the 1970s?

Here’s a quote from a once-Catholic in Stephen Bullivant’s study on church disaffiliation:

If things were stable, with healthy full pews, would the Church care about me and my faith?

Good question.

Do you suppose the nones and less active Catholics see a bit of self-preservation in the modern efforts of “new” evangelization, apologetics, and the like? Aside from Fulton Sheen catechizing the rich and famous in the 1950s, did Catholics really care? And today’s SCGS* contingent maybe still doesn’t care.

Would you recommend Stephen Bullivant’s work?

I am not sure. We were given one chapter of his book and heard a one-hour interview. His has been the best of the six presentations so far. Some of the others have been underwhelming, to be honest. Not bad, really. But nothing new to me.
