235. Those who work for tranquil social coexistence should never forget that inequality and lack of integral human development make peace impossible.
Peaceful society that masks inequities is just throwing a fantasy party for the privileged. When prejudice is unmasked, as it often is, the agitation will come as a surprise to the upper crust, but it won’t be as jarring for those who live trampled amongst the 99%. If we think that refunding the police, or outfitting them with military weaponry will help, we are sadly deluded. And wasting resources better put into human concerns.
Indeed, “without equal opportunities, different forms of aggression and conflict will find a fertile terrain for growth and eventually explode. When a society – whether local, national or global – is willing to leave a part of itself on the fringes, no political programs or resources spent on law enforcement or surveillance systems can indefinitely guarantee tranquility”. [Evangelii Gaudium 59] If we have to begin anew, it must always be from the least of our brothers and sisters.
