NWSL: Heads Rolling

NWSL logo.svgExits, male as well as female, continue in the National Women’s Soccer League after the bombshell (but not surprising) revelation that a coach intimidated and abused players. The Caroline Courage ousted another offender. Two others were pink-slipped earlier this season. The reputations of these men were open secrets, yet they continued to be hired recycled into new jobs and different teams. The league head resigned over the weekend. The CEO of the team departed yesterday at the request of players and supporters.

Megan Rapinoe, World Cup hero, tweeted “Burn it all down” last last week. I don’t think that’s an extreme message. Certainly women aren’t perfect when it comes to professional behavior with women and people of color. But it seems clear no man should be trusted coaching women in this league. I wonder if any men will be hired as replacements in the near future.

League officials have long touted the NWSL as the best women’s soccer league in the world. Today, that might be true if they were the only league, or if leagues were judged solely by performance on the field and not issues such as player safety. Today, misbehaving leaders have been revealed as running a bush league staffed by a ring of organized criminals.
