The Armchair Liturgist Prays Triduum Hours in a Parish

Hours from now till Easter evening: what to do?

In my experience, my parishes have done morning prayer on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Usually at the same time as morning Mass. One or two people are often surprised it’s not Mass on Thursday. I have fielded a request–or overheard it–for a morning Mass on Thursday.

At the student center, we would pray compline just before midnight on Thursday, just before the Eucharist would be retired. My earliest experience of the Hours during the Triduum was Compline on Good Friday evening in a parish that had a 3pm Liturgy.

Then of course, we have the prospect of Vespers on Easter evening. I’ve never done that, but the day could be coming by next year.

Sit in the purple chair and render judgment on how a parish–possibly yours–might pray the Hours during these last days of Holy Week.
