Not So Divine Comedy

The Dicastery for Culture invited a number of humorists and comedians to the Vatican. Predictably, some Catholics are fussing. No conservatives. Frankly, I find few conservatives funny.

Some two-thirds of the confirmed participants are from Italy. Just a handful of Americans, but predictably, US people get the attention from other US people.

The upcoming meeting, it noted, aims to “celebrate the beauty of human diversity … [and] promote a message of peace, love and solidarity”. It “promises to be a moment of meaningful intercultural dialogue and sharing of joy and hope.”

Pope John Paul II was largely responsible for developing outreach from Church to culture. It has continued, and rightly so. Yet some people think invitations, meetings, blessings, and such are rewards for good girls and boys. That hasn’t been so. Ever really.
