about this site
Catholic Sensibility is a personal blog by a Catholic layperson with comments and occasional other writings by Catholics and non-Catholics. We make no particular claims to have the completeness of a Roman Catholic expression of Christianity. It contains opinion, interpretation, and personal musings. That’s it. Nothing official or authoritatively connected to the Magisterium.

Poor Persecuted Person
Blogger Rod Dreher takes a break from the Pope Francis Archbishop Viganò to complain about persecution in the age of mercy. I’m generally not in favor of people losing jobs. I’ve lost a few in my history–not a pleasant experience. Friends and family, too. If I were a boss I would give people jobs, not take them away.
That said, there’s a back-and-forth on the link above, especially in the comments and in Mr Dreher’s seven updates.
The advocacy for “tough” sermons often amuses me. Topics like abortion or same-sex activity seem easy enough. The people who advocate for them don’t usually appear to be struggling with such offenses. It’s hard not to credit support for such speeches as, “Thank God we married a person of the opposite sex, don’t vote Dem, etc., like those people who have an abortion every time their contraception fails. Which must be a lot.”
I read what the priest preached about, and it didn’t strike me as having much theological depth. I wonder what his supporters would think if he knew his parishioners well enough to ferret out their sins–gossip and detraction, envy, gluttony, etc., and preached about that.
Fr Gavancho has also served in a large number of parishes over the past several years. A lot of communities must really not like his preaching. Or he has significant problems with other important aspects of his ministry, and all his pastors have found this out–maybe including a bishop or two.
The way human resources things work, especially on the legal side, Fr Gavancho’s supervisors can’t go into great detail on why they fired him. So the man is free to put a public spin on it, and there’s nothing the people who know can really say.
