Classical music venues aren’t what they used to be. I have to say one reason I’ve loved the concert hall is because it’s smoke free.
Cellist Matt Haimovitz, a pioneer of classical club-hopping … loves the autonomy of the club shows and has made a cross-country tour of barrooms and coffeehouses, including the New York punk-rock club CBGB, which recently closed its doors.
“At a certain point I began to question why I wasn’t seeing my generation in the concert hall,” Haimovitz said. “And I found it liberating to be able to program newer works or things that didn’t fit into traditional concert programming.”

As a musician who frequents bars, I think this is a fantastic idea. And as someone fed up with guitars in and out of church, nothing would please me more than replacing the ubiquitous guitarist covering U2 songs with a cellist or classical pianist. I think it might get some support from people my age, or at least add some class to a bar.
